Tallow & Honey Face Cream: Why This Ancient Ingredient Belongs in Your Modern Skincare Routine
Share
There's a moment that happens at almost every vendor show I do.
Someone picks up the Tallow & Honey Face Cream, reads the label, and their eyebrows go up just slightly. Beef tallow? On my face?
I get it. I had the same reaction when I first started hearing everyone talk about tallow skincare. It was everywhere — holistic health communities, ancestral wellness circles, clean beauty spaces. And the claims were compelling: tallow is the closest thing to your skin's own natural sebum. It's rich in fat-soluble vitamins. It's deeply nourishing at a cellular level. People were saying it transformed their skin.
So I tried it.
And it broke me out.
I tell you that because I believe you deserve honesty — the kind I'd want from someone selling me something. Plain tallow didn't work on my face. But the idea behind it? The biocompatibility, the nutrient density, the ancestral wisdom of using whole, real ingredients on your skin? That I believed in completely.
So I went back to the formulation table and asked a different question: What would make tallow work for sensitive, acne-prone skin? What ingredients would amplify its healing properties and complement it — not just fill a jar, but actually earn their place?
The result is what you're holding.

What Makes This Cream Different
Every ingredient in this formula was chosen with one purpose: to pack the most healing punch possible, without anything unnecessary getting in the way.
No water. No emulsifiers. No synthetic preservatives. No artificial fragrance. No fillers. No hormone disruptors.
Just six intentional ingredients, working together.
The Ingredients — And Why They Work
Grass-Fed Beef Suet Tallow
Not all tallow is created equal, and this matters.
Our tallow is 100% dry-rendered beef suet — the fat surrounding the kidneys, which is considered the most nutrient-dense and pure form of tallow available. It's sourced from Harry Hansen Meat Service in Wisconsin, a small-batch producer committed to quality. Grass-fed and locally grown, harvested with intention.
Why does this matter for your skin? Because suet tallow is extraordinarily rich in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), oleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid — a fatty acid profile that closely mirrors the lipids found in healthy human skin cells. This is what people mean when they say tallow is "biocompatible." Your skin recognizes it. It absorbs it readily, rather than sitting on top of it.
Beyond fatty acids, grass-fed suet tallow delivers fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K — the same vitamins your skin needs to repair, regenerate, and defend itself. Vitamin A supports cell turnover. Vitamin D supports barrier function. Vitamin K helps with discoloration and dark areas. Vitamin E protects against oxidative damage.
These aren't vitamins added into a formula — they're naturally occurring in the ingredient itself.
The science backs this up: Research on the skin barrier consistently shows that lipid-replenishment therapies using fatty acids similar to those in sebum are highly effective for restoring barrier function in compromised or dry skin. Tallow's lipid composition places it in this category naturally.

Raw Organic Honey
Honey has been used medicinally for thousands of years, and modern dermatology has confirmed what ancient healers knew: it works.
Raw organic honey is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment and pulls it into the skin. But it does far more than hydrate. Raw honey contains hydrogen peroxide-generating compounds, flavonoids, polyphenols, and defensin-1 - a bee-derived antimicrobial peptide that give it measurable antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
For skin that's sensitized, prone to redness, or healing from damage, honey is one of the most gentle and effective ingredients in nature. It soothes while it seals.
Paired with tallow, honey creates a dynamic that works on two levels simultaneously: tallow restores the lipid barrier and delivers fat-soluble nutrients, while honey draws in water-based moisture and calms the surface. Nourishment from the inside of the barrier. Hydration from the outside.
What this means for you: Plumper, softer skin with less redness without the synthetic humectants and stabilizers found in conventional moisturizers.

Castor Oil
Castor oil is the quiet powerhouse of this formula.
Rich in ricinoleic acid (a rare fatty acid that makes up roughly 90% of its composition), castor oil has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown in studies to support collagen and elastin synthesis, the structural proteins responsible for skin firmness and elasticity.
It also has a unique molecular weight that allows it to penetrate deeply into the skin rather than just coating the surface. This makes it an effective carrier that helps drive the other beneficial compounds further into the tissue.
In this formula, castor oil supports firmness, texture improvement, and long-term skin resilience. It also contributes to the cream's consistency helping achieve that luxurious, spreadable texture without requiring waxes or synthetic thickeners.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol)
Every formula needs a protector. Vitamin E is ours.
As a potent antioxidant, vitamin E neutralizes free radicals; the unstable molecules generated by UV exposure, pollution, stress, and environmental toxins that accelerate skin aging and damage. It also plays a direct role in supporting the skin barrier and has been shown to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and scarring over time.
In this formula, vitamin E also serves a functional purpose: it acts as a natural preservative, extending the shelf life of the oil-based ingredients without the need for synthetic preservatives.
One ingredient. Multiple jobs. That's the kind of intentionality this formula was built on.
Lavender Essential Oil
Here's where I want to be transparent, because I believe in it.
Some essential oils cause sensitivity reactions in certain people that was actually a concern I had when formulating this cream. I didn't want to add fragrance for the sake of fragrance. I wanted any aromatic ingredient to earn its place therapeutically.
did.
Lavender essential oil contains linalool and linalyl acetate, compounds with well-documented anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and wound-healing properties. Studies have shown lavender to support skin regeneration and reduce inflammation markers in skin tissue. It calms sensitized skin while simultaneously supporting the repair process.
And yes, it also helps balance the natural earthy scent of tallow. But it was chosen for what it does, not just what it smells like.

Frankincense Essential Oil (Boswellia)
If lavender is the soother, frankincense is the renewer.
Frankincense contains boswellic acids and alpha-pinene, compounds shown to inhibit inflammatory enzymes and support the skin's natural regenerative processes. It's been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine for wound healing and skin restoration and contemporary research is now catching up to validate that history.
For aging skin specifically, frankincense has shown promise in supporting collagen synthesis and reducing the appearance of fine lines, sun damage, and uneven tone. It also has natural astringent properties that help tighten and firm the skin's surface.
In this formula, frankincense and lavender work together — one renewing, one soothing; while both contribute to the complex, warm, grounding scent profile that makes this cream feel like a ritual rather than a routine.

What This Cream Is For
This cream was formulated for people who are done putting things on their skin that they can't pronounce, can't research, and can't trust.
If you're in your 30s, 40s, or 50s and you've spent years cycling through moisturizers loaded with parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and petroleum derivatives wondering why your skin still feels reactive, dull, or prematurely aged this was made for you.
It targets:
- Dry, damaged, or compromised skin barriers; tallow and castor oil rebuild what's been depleted
- Fine lines and loss of firmness; frankincense, castor oil, and vitamin E support collagen and elastin
- Redness, irritation, and sensitivity; lavender and raw honey calm and soothe
- Uneven tone and dullness; vitamin A from tallow + vitamin E support healthy cell turnover and glow
- Deep, lasting hydration; honey pulls moisture in while tallow seals it
And it does all of this with six ingredients. Not sixty.
How to Use It
Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin; ideally at night when your skin is in active repair mode.
Warm it between your fingertips first. This activates the oils and allows for a more even, gentle application. Press into the face and neck using upward motions rather than dragging.
A little goes a long way.
It also works beautifully on the under-eye area, neck and chest, dry hands and cuticles, chapped lips, and healing tattoos.

A Note on Tallow + Acne-Prone Skin
I'm going to tell you what I tell people at every vendor show: tallow doesn't work for everyone's face, including mine.
If you have naturally oilier or more acne-prone skin, I recommend patch testing first; apply a small amount to your jawline or inner arm for a few nights before committing to a full-face application. What works beautifully for a dry, mature skin barrier may be too occlusive for some oilier skin types.
This is not a flaw in the formula. It's the reality of bioindividuality and any brand that tells you their product works for everyone is not being straight with you.
What I can tell you is that this formula was specifically crafted to be as non-reactive as possible: no synthetic fragrance, no preservatives, no water-based ingredients that can harbor bacteria, no fillers. If tallow-based skincare is going to work for your face, this is the version to try.
Sourcing & Integrity
Our tallow comes from Harry Hansen Meat Service in Wisconsin. A small-batch producer raising 100% grass-fed cattle, locally grown and harvested. Dry-rendered suet, not processed industrial tallow. Every batch of this cream is hand-formulated in small quantities so nothing sits in a warehouse losing potency.
Clean sourcing isn't a marketing phrase here. It's the foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is tallow face cream safe for sensitive skin? A: Tallow has a fatty acid profile very similar to human sebum, which generally makes it well-tolerated by sensitive skin. Our formula also contains raw honey and lavender, both of which have natural anti-inflammatory properties. That said, every skin is different, we always recommend a patch test before full use, especially if you have known sensitivities to essential oils.
Q: Will tallow clog my pores or cause breakouts? A: This is the most common concern and a fair one. Tallow is technically comedogenic for some skin types, particularly those that are naturally oilier or acne-prone. As the formulator, I'm honest about the fact that plain tallow breaks me out. This formula was crafted to minimize that risk, but we still recommend patch testing if your skin leans oily. For dry, combination, or mature skin, tallow is typically very well tolerated.
Q: Does this cream smell like beef? A: There is a very subtle, earthy undertone that is natural to tallow but the lavender and frankincense essential oils give this cream a warm, grounding, spa-like scent that most people find pleasant. We chose therapeutic essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance specifically so the aroma would serve the skin, not just cover an odor.
Q: What makes grass-fed suet tallow different from regular tallow? A: Suet is the fat from around the kidneys and organs it's denser, more nutrient-rich, and considered the highest-quality form of tallow for skincare. Grass-fed animals produce tallow with a higher concentration of omega-3 fatty acids, CLA, and fat-soluble vitamins compared to grain-fed. We source ours from a small Wisconsin farm (Harry Hansen Meat Service) specifically for this reason.
Q: Is this product vegan? A: No. This cream contains grass-fed beef tallow and raw organic honey. It is not suitable for those following a strictly vegan lifestyle.
Q: Can I use this around my eyes? A: Yes. Because this formula contains no water, no synthetic preservatives, and no harsh actives, it is gentle enough for the delicate under-eye area. Apply a very small amount and avoid getting directly into the eyes.
Q: How long does a jar last? A: Because a pea-sized amount covers the full face and neck, most customers find a jar lasts 8-12 weeks with nightly use.
Q: Does this replace a serum or go over one? A: This cream works beautifully as the final step in your evening routine applied after any water-based serums or treatments. The oil-rich base helps seal in whatever you've applied underneath, enhancing absorption.
Q: What's the shelf life? A: We recommend using within 6 months of opening. Vitamin E acts as a natural antioxidant preservative, but as with all small-batch, preservative-free products, freshness matters. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.
Q: Can this be used during pregnancy? A: We recommend consulting your healthcare provider before using any product containing essential oils during pregnancy. Lavender and frankincense are generally considered lower-risk, but individual circumstances vary and your provider knows your situation best.
